University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana is the largest interdisciplinary social sciences faculty in Slovenia and one of the larger such institutions in Europe. It was established in 1961 as the Higher School of Political Sciences and adopted its current name in 1991. Through its teaching, research, and infrastructural activities, it has played a key role in shaping the development of the social sciences in Slovenia for more than six decades. FDV offers 11 undergraduate programmes, 12 master's programmes, and an interdisciplinary doctoral programme covering 34 fields of study. Its professors and researchers work within four departments in the core disciplines of sociology, cultural studies, political science, and communication studies, with religious studies also being developed within the first two areas. The Faculty introduced the course Sociology of Religion in 1965, and since 1968 it has also monitored religion-related topics empirically through the Slovenian Public Opinion survey. The resulting longitudinal datasets, preserved by the Faculty’s Social Science Data Archives, constitute one of the key infrastructural resources for the study of religion and religious change and represent an important contribution to the national RESILIENCE node.
